Be a Volunteer
Give a little time – make a big difference
As a Breakthrough volunteer, you can make a big contribution to the work we do.
If you’re available in the daytime, evenings, or even just occasionally, there’s a wide range of activities that you could help us with. There are opportunities in both our London and Edinburgh offices.
Daytime
If you can offer day-to-day office administration support and think you’d enjoy volunteering for Breakthrough, get in touch.
Ideally, we’re looking for volunteers who can be with us during normal office hours – 9.30am - 5.30pm Monday to Friday, from 1 – 5 days per week. There is no minimum commitment; however, ideally we’re looking for people that could volunteer for three months or more.
Please see our volunteer vacancies page for current positions.(link to be added)
Evening
Monday and Thursday evenings are volunteer evenings at Breakthrough. On these days, between 5.30 and 7.00pm, volunteers join us to help out with data inputting and preparing mailshots.
From time to time as an evening volunteer, you could also find yourself at theatres or other venues where we organise collections.
There’s no minimum commitment required for the evening sessions – just come along and join in when you can.
Events
If demands on your time mean that a regular commitment is impractical, helping out at events is an ideal way to make a contribution.
Throughout the year, Breakthrough is involved in many events. We’re always grateful to have extra people around to offer refreshments to thirsty runners, cheer our teams on, hold collections and carry out other valuable tasks.
Again, there’s no minimum requirement - though we’d especially like to hear from you if you can do weekdays.
Professional
A professional volunteer is someone who can bring specific skills, experience or knowledge to some of our more specialist or strategic projects.
At the moment, we’re particularly keen to hear from interested volunteers who could contribute to these projects:
- new reward model
- e-recruitment development
- three–year strategic plan
- database review
- competency–based recruitment
- handbook for staff who supervise volunteers
