£1,000 Challenge
The £1,000 Challenge is where it all began. It’s what made the opening of the £15 million Breakthrough Toby Robins Breast Cancer Research Centre possible in 1999.
Today, the ever-growing band of £1,000 Challengers is still one of the most dedicated groups of fundraisers anywhere.
Our Challengers are (extra)ordinary people who do ordinary things to raise £1,000 for Breakthrough. You can raise the money however you like – from car boot sales to cake baking, pool parties to pub quizzes, our dedicated team will help make your fundraising efforts a success.
We’ll support you on your journey, with top tips and advice (Word doc, 551 kb)
to make your Challenge the best it can be.
As a £1,000 Challenger, you will visit the Centre, meet the scientists and see how your funds are used. The visit is a real inspiration and great motivation, as Challenger Jill Johnson discovered:
“I visited the Research Centre and was so warmly welcomed by the staff and made to feel so special. Everything was explained clearly and simply. The scientists’ dedication was outstanding - a realisation that in the fight against breast cancer we have so many good guys on our side! It’s made my Challenge mean so much more.”
Once you’ve raised your £1,000, you can nominate a person who has inspired you. Their name will then appear on one of our Challenger Walls. You can honour anyone for whatever reason - a celebration of survival, commemoration of someone you’ve lost or a ‘thank you’ to someone for their support. Their name will stand as permanent recognition of all those who have been affected by breast cancer and as a reminder of your contribution to our vital research. There are currently four Challengers' walls.
